Our fundraising event “A Tribute to Mark Knopfler ” lunch at the Civic Centre, Newcastle upon Tyne was a huge success, as we honoured a true local hero with the Variety Club's most prestigious award - The Silver Heart. Jools Holland compered the Event and among hundreds of guests and fans were many familiar faces including Alan Shearer, Peter Beardsley, Bruce Welch, Jimmy Nail, Tim Healy, Glenn McCrory, and Dire Straits colleagues John Illsley and Guy Fletcher.  It was also the 80th Birthday of Mark's mother, Louisa, and she was presented with a bouquet of flowers from her famous son.

Other stars, including Sting, Eric Clapton, Emmylou Harris, cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, film director Lord Puttnam and TV presenter Nick Clarke, who were unable to attend the event recorded film tributes to their friend and congratulated him on this well deserved tribute. 

Surrounded by his family and friends, Mark said he was "honoured and humbled to hear what his friends and fans had to say" and that he had "been presented with all sorts of awards over the years including Grammies and gold records, but receiving the Silver Heart outshone everything".  He also thanked everyone for supporting the event and said how special it felt to receive this honour in Newcastle.

Mark ended the day with a live rendition of one of his most famous hits - Local Hero.

The Racing Fraternity of the North and over 300 people made this a night to remember!  As promised it was a great night as tribute was paid to one of the Region's best loved commentators, journalists and racing pundits along with a host of celebrities!  Doug won the prestigious Clive Graham Trophy for "Journalist of the Year" in 2003 and his Tribute night was made even more special as he was awarded the Variety Club's highest accolade - The Silver Heart - for his support of our Charity.

The Auction (which included: A morning on the heath with Sir Mark Prescott plus a tour of the prestigious Darley Stud, Newmarket;  A day Pheasant Shooting at Lilburn Estate in late January 07 for 8 experienced guns.  Drinks & Lunch included (reserve bid of £4050 already received!);  2 Emirates Business Class flights to Dubai  with 7nts b/b in deluxe room at the prestigious Grosvenor Hotel in Dubai) the raffle and pledge cards raised in excess of £35k net - which we are really delighted with.
