Variety Club exists to aid children
who are sick, disabled or disadvantaged irrespective of race, colour
or creed. Here in Northern Region, our one aim is to help as many needy children as possible.
We do this by fundraising and
personally providing support and a helping hand for children in need.
Every penny we raise here in the North East is used to help the needy
children in our region. Our office is based in Newcastle upon Tyne
and covers a wide area from the borders of Scotland, across to Cumbria
and down past Teesside to the A66. We have a dedicated chairman (Peter Johnson) and committee who meet once a month to discuss the appeals we
receive for help and also to organise fundraising events. Our
committee members are not paid for their services nor are any expenses
reimbursed and they are expected to devote as much time and money to
the Variety Club and its objectives as their circumstances permit.
Variety Club fulfills innumerable children's dreams each year and finds it hard to say 'no' to a youngster in distress. In 1988 the Easy Riders Wheelchair Programme was introduced and over 2800 custom-designed wheelchairs and buggies have been donated to children in the UK who are contending with a wide range of disabilities. For a child confined to a wheelchair the simplest of freedoms seem unattainable. Variety Club aims to make their journey a little easier.
